Bread for the Journey

“Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.” — 1 Kings 19:5–6 (NIV)

There are moments in life when strength simply runs out. You pray, serve, work hard, and still feel drained. Elijah, one of the greatest prophets in Scripture, reached such a breaking point. After a great victory on Mount Carmel, he fled in fear and exhaustion, sat under a tree, and prayed that his life would end. He was tired, not just in body but in soul.

Yet, in that moment of despair, God did not scold him. He sent an angel with food and water. Twice the angel said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” That simple act of care reveals something profound about divine favour: God knows when you are too weary to continue, and His grace steps in to sustain you. The bread and water Elijah received were not just food for his body; they were symbols of spiritual strength for his purpose. Scripture says, “He traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God” (1 Kings 19:8).

Sometimes, the favour of God does not appear as miracles or promotions. It comes as quiet moments of refreshment — a kind word, a renewed sense of peace, or the strength to take one more step. That is the bread for the journey.

Jesus reminded us of this truth when He said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry” (John 6:35). What sustains you is not just material provision but spiritual nourishment. When you draw from God’s presence, you find new strength to walk through what once seemed impossible.

If you are in a season of weariness, take a moment to rest in God’s care. Let His Word feed your heart and His Spirit renew your strength. The same God who sent bread to Elijah is still sending grace to you today. You may feel weak, but you are not abandoned. Grace will carry you where strength cannot.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being the source of my strength. When I feel tired, remind me that Your grace is my nourishment. Feed me with Your Word and refresh my soul for the journey ahead. Let me rise with new strength and courage to keep walking in Your purpose. Amen.
