Blood on the Doorpost

“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.” – Exodus 12:13

The Mark of Safety

In ancient Egypt, the night of the Passover was a night of great fear and darkness. But for the people of God, safety didn’t depend on how strong their doors were or how good they had been that year. Their safety depended entirely on one thing: the red mark of the blood on their doorposts.

When the judgment passed through the land, it didn’t look for the “perfect” families or the “richest” houses. It looked for the sign. If the blood was there, that house was off-limits to destruction.

The Ultimate Exchange

This is the heart of the “Beauty for Ashes” story. Before we can receive the crown of beauty, we have to deal with the ashes of our own sin and brokenness.

  • His Life for Your “Ashes”: We often try to “clean up” our lives before we come to God. We try to sweep up the ashes ourselves. But the Gospel says we can’t fix our own mess. Instead, Jesus—the Lamb of God—gave His life so that His perfection could cover our failures.
  • Marked, Not Perfect: You might feel like you don’t deserve God’s protection today. You might feel “dusty” from your mistakes. But remember: the blood on the doorpost wasn’t a reward for being good; it was a covering for being human. You are safe today not because you have a perfect record, but because you belong to the One who does.
  • The Shield of the Lamb: When guilt or shame tries to “enter your house” and steal your peace, point back to the mark. The sacrifice of Jesus is a finished work. It stands between you and your past, ensuring that your future is secure.

A Simple Truth

Your security doesn’t come from your performance; it comes from your position. If you have accepted the sacrifice of Jesus, you are “marked.” The darkness of this world might be swirling outside, but inside the covering of the Lamb, there is peace. You can sleep soundly tonight knowing that God sees the blood and calls you His own.

Living Under the Covering

  • Stop the Self-Cleaning: Today, when you feel guilty about a past mistake, stop trying to “earn” your way back into God’s good graces. Instead, say: “Thank You, Jesus, that Your blood covers this mistake.”
  • Identify Your “Threshold”: Your “doorpost” is your mind and your heart. Be careful what you let in. Remind yourself that you are a “marked house”—shame, fear, and condemnation have no legal right to stay in your home.
  • Thank the Lamb: Take a moment to think about the “Ultimate Exchange.” He took the cross so you could have the crown. Let that gratitude change the way you see your day.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the sacrifice that covers my life. I am so grateful that my safety doesn’t depend on my perfection, but on Your blood. Thank You for taking my “ashes” and giving me Your life in return. When fear tries to knock on my door today, help me to remember that I am marked by You and held in Your hand. Amen.
