“Moses said to the Lord, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue.'” – Exodus 4:10
The Anatomy of an Excuse
When God called Moses to lead a nation, Moses didn’t lead with his resume; he led with his list of failures. He looked at his stutter, his past mistakes, and his lack of charisma as “ashes”—worthless traits that made him the wrong man for the job.
We do the same thing. When we feel a nudge to lead, to create, or to help someone, we immediately pull out our “inadequacy list.” We tell God we aren’t smart enough, young enough, stable enough, or “holy” enough. We focus so much on the dust of our limitations that we forget who provided the breath in our lungs.
Why God Loves Your Despite Weakness
If you feel unqualified today, you are in the perfect position to be used by God. In the Kingdom, your “defect” is often your greatest “department.”
- The Power is in the Presence, Not the Person: God’s response to Moses wasn’t “I’ll give you speech therapy.” His response was, “I will be with your mouth.” God doesn’t need your perfection; He only needs your presence.
- The “Crown” is His Glory: If we were perfectly equipped, we would take all the credit. When God uses our “slow speech” to move mountains, everyone knows it was Him. Your weakness is the canvas where His strength is most visible.
- Equipping Happens on the Way: God doesn’t give you the “crown of beauty” while you’re sitting on the couch making excuses. He equips you as you step out. The qualification comes in the obedience.
A Simple Truth
God isn’t looking for your ability; He is looking for your availability. Your “ashes”—the things you’re ashamed of or the parts of you that feel broken—are exactly where God wants to show off His power. Stop waiting to be “ready” and start being willing. The One who made your mouth is the One who will give you the words.
Moving Past Your “But”
- Identify Your “But”: What is the one excuse you keep giving God? “I would serve, BUT I’m too busy…” or “I would speak up, BUT I’m too shy…” Write it down and look at it.
- Flip the Script: Replace your excuse with a declaration of God’s power. Instead of saying “I am weak,” say “He is strong in my weakness.”
- Take the “Step of the Unqualified”: Do one thing today that scares you or makes you feel out of your league. Send that email, offer that prayer, or start that project. Do it badly if you have to—just do it with Him.
Prayer
Father, take my insecurities and use them for Your glory. I am tired of looking at my limitations instead of Your limitless power. Help me to stop making excuses and start trusting Your empowerment. I give You my “stuttering tongue” and my “slow feet.” Use me today, not because I am capable, but because You are. Amen.
